What does the world look like when you examine it and put words on it through glass?
The exhibition Empiria showcases Kirsti Taiviola’s work with glass and light, and celebrates her career in the glass industry spanning two decades. Her years spent as a glass designer, artist and teacher have transformed how she sees the world. The red thread in Taiviola’s career has been an interest in the possibilities of glass and light as tools of transmitting observations and making something visible. Her works examine e.g. questions of materiality, craftsmanship and authorship. The works presented in the exhibition shed light on the artistic working methods and themes that have been present throughout Taiviola’s long career, such as research, time, observation and the interface between matter and the immaterial. Many works are based on the collection of different types of research data, which have been processed and analysed to give a physical form to the topics and questions at hand. In these works, glass is both the object of thinking and an instrument of it.
Exhibition open 29.10.-31.12.2021 at The Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimäki, Finland
